Alaska Coastal Ecology Trips for Groups

Ecology field study for college, high school or other organized youth or adult groups can be arranged during the spring, summer, or fall. Program length ranges from one to seven+ days with guided activities based out of the Peterson Bay Field Station, and lodging provided in 5 comfortable yurts. In this immersive environment, students head out on the trails and beaches to learn about topics such as the changing coastal forests and invasive species; water quality, plankton tows, and Harmful Algal Blooms; intertidal ecology and monitoring efforts at Otter Rock and China Poot Bay; and human interactions with these lands and waters over time.  We'll work with you to create a schedule of activities that fits your groups' focus, interests, abilities, and needs. Service Learning Expeditions

Service Learning Expeditions can be arranged from May - October. Groups learn about natural history and stewardship through service projects. Projects can include trail work, building projects, invasive plant management, facilities beautification, data collection through monitoring projects, and more. Marine Mammal Mysteries

June 4-8, 2012

Ages 9-15. This NEW camp is for kids who are curious about the ins and outs of animals.  Campers will spend 4 nights and 5 days at the Peterson Bay Field Station learning about marine mammals, being wildlife detectives and articulating (or putting together) a sea otter skeleton! Includes a boat tour on Kachemak Bay to view marine mammals. Cost: $400 per person. Download our flyer!

Ages 12-15. This 6 day outdoor adventure and environmental stewardship camp includes 5 overnights at the Peterson Bay Field Station and one day at Homer Farmer's Market. Activities include hiking, kayaking, yurt camping, cooking, multi-media exploration and service learning opportunities. Cost: $530 per person.

Family Camps

June 15-17,  July 6-8, July 27-29 and August 3-5, 2012

Fun and adventure for the family.  CACS Family Nature Camps are a great opportunity to get families to be together and get outside in an amazing Kachemak Bay setting.  Activities include: tidepooling, hiking, camfire songs, wildlife watching plus games and hands-on activities for all ages.  Families sleep in yurts.  Costs inlcude boat transportation, meals and program.  Kayaking is available at an additional cost.  For more information call 235-6667

Cost: $450 includes 2 adults & 1 child, $375 includes 1 adult & 1 child (each additional family member is $80). Price includes ALL transportation, meals, lodging and program costs for the entire weekend! Kayking is optional and an aditional $50 per person.

Yurt "Camping" at the PBFS

Spend the night in the Field Station’s yurts! A comfortable camping experience at the edge of the Alaskan wilderness, overnight yurt stays are perfect for families, couples, or friends. Spending the night allows you to truly enjoy best the land of the midnight sun has to offer - walk the beach after dinner, gather around our spacious campfire ring, or watch the sun (eventually) set over the ghost forest. Enjoy a relaxing morning before joining the next day’s Natural History Tour.  Overnight visitors depart the Homer Harbor at 4:00 p.m. and return at 4:00 p.m. the next day unless otherwise arranged. 

Overnight visitors have use of the Field Station kitchen for cooking (electric stove, microwave, coffee maker, toaster) and food storage (refrigerator and small freezer compartment). Each yurt has six bunks and with camp mattresses, as well as floor space and camp mattresses for two more people, but you will need to bring your own sleeping bags and extra pads if desired.

Yurt rental: $50/person or $200 to rent the entire yurt for a family or group.
Yurt rentals are available in combination with tours.

 

What to bring:

  • A sack lunch (drinking water and complimentary hot beverages available)
  • Waterproof boots or shoes (we do have some boots available to borrow)
  • Warm, layered clothing including raincoat and rain pants if you have them
  • Camera, video camera, binoculars if you have them
  • Food and sleeping bags for overnight yurt stays

Teen EcoAdventure Camp

July 21-30, 2021

For ages 12-15, this 10 day outdoor adventure and environmental stewardship camp explores the changing environment and how this connects to a most basic and delicious part of our lives - food! Activities include backcountry & yurt camping, hiking along forests, beaches, alpine, and at the foot of a glacier, berry picking and preserving, learning about salmon fishing, tidepooling, understanding ethnobotany and local edible plant uses, and having fun in the kitchen making a range of homemade foods. Throughout all this, participants learn about how different changes to the forest, beach, and marine ecosystems affect the food we eat and how our food choices affect the environment and communities around us.
Cost: $999 per person. Price includes all boat transportation around Kachemak Bay, food, and lodging.  Click here to register your camper online!

Family Nature Camps 

Fun and adventure for the family. CACS Family Nature Camps are a great opportunity for families to be together and get outside in an amazing Kachemak Bay setting. Cancellations 30 - 59 days prior to the camp start receive a full refund MINUS a $50 processing fee.  Cancellations 15 - 30 days prior: 50% refund.  Cancellations made 14 days or less prior: no refund. Ages 8 – 11. Every other Thursday 1-3pm. 

Learn all about the animals that spend their time at the Wynn Nature Center! We will learn to identify these animals by the scat, tracks, and other signs they leave behind. Please dress for the weather!

Creatures of the Dock

All Ages! 1pm and 3pm daily. Perfect for families or people who have a short amount of time but want to see lots of sea creatures! This daily program is fun for the whole family. Guided tours of the incredible life under the dock at the Homer Harbor. 1-hour tours leave from the CACS yurt on the Spit, June-August for $10 a person.

Ages 6-10. Monday - Wednesday - Friday. 9:30am - 12:00pm. Enjoy a S.neak P.eek I.nto T.hings as you explore sea creatures under the dock, search for seabirds and marine mammals, investigate the beach, learn about plants, do ocean crafts and MORE! $10 per day or $40 for 5 sessions.

The program begins June 7th and goes until August 13th.

High School Internships

CACS offers a volunteer internship program for high school students who wish to gain more experience working in the fields of environmental education and environmental science. The internship combines working at the Carl Wynn Nature Center and the Homer Spit Yurt assisting with our popular Creature of the Dock Tours. Interns are also trained to be camp counselors for our summer camps for youth ages 9-15. Interns are encouraged to work on a special project of interest during their 6-week internship.
