Marine Mammal Mysteries

June 4-8, 2012

Ages 9-15. This NEW camp is for kids who are curious about the ins and outs of animals.  Campers will spend 4 nights and 5 days at the Peterson Bay Field Station learning about marine mammals, being wildlife detectives and articulating a marine mammal skeleton!  Download a flyer and a regisration form here.

August 6-11, 2012 Sustainable Foods

Ages 12-15. This 6 day outdoor adventure and environmental stewardship camp includes 5 overnights at the Peterson Bay Field Station and one day at Homer Farmer's Market. Family Camps

June 15-17,  July 6-8, July 27-29 and August 3-5, 2012

Fun and adventure for the family.  CACS Family Nature Camps are a great opportunity to get families to be together and get outside in an amazing Kachemak Bay setting.  Activities include: tidepooling, hiking, camfire songs, wildlife watching plus games and hands-on activities for all ages.  Families sleep in yurts.  Costs inlcude boat transportation, meals and program.  Kayaking is available at an additional cost.  For more information see our 2011 camp flyer or sign up for a camp here.

Cost: $450 includes 2 adults & 1 child, $375 includes 1 adult & 1 child (each additional family member is $80). Price includes ALL transportation, meals, lodging and program costs for the entire weekend! Kayking is optional and an aditional $50 per person.

Knee-high Naturalist Program

Ages 2-4. A preschool story hour that includes a story, short hike and craft activity. Fridays: 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. June - August. Parents welcome. $2 donation requested (Members free!). Programs begin June 15, 2012

Bio-kids

Ages 5-8. Weekly series of programs exploring art & nature. Tuesdays: 1-3 p.m.  Each weekly program includes an art or craft project, and a short hike.  Please dress for the weather! Drop-ins are welcome. $5/class or $4/class for CACS members.  Classes begin June 19, 2012. Dowload a Registration Form.

Wilderness Survival

Ages 6-9. Weekly program that teaches youth how to survive in the wilderness. Includes building shelters, orienteering, fire building, medicinal and edible plants and more. Thursdays 1-3pm. June - August. Drop-ins are welcome. $5/class, $4/class for CACS members or $35/for all 10 sessions.  10 classes total. Classes begin June 21, 2012. Dowload a Registration Form.

WSI: Wildlife Investigations

Ages 8-11. Weekly program that explores the exciting world of wildlife (including mammals, birds and forensics!)  Learn the basics of birding and monitoring nesting songbirds, investigate skulls, learn to live trap voles and monitor small mammal movement and more at the Wynn Nature Center.  Get a sneak peak of the secret lives of the birds and animals that live at the Wynn Nature Center. Wednesdays 10 - 12. June - August.  Drop-ins are welcome.  $5/class, $4/class for CACS members or $35/for all 10 sessions. 10 classes total.Classes begin June 20, 2012.

Creatures of the Dock

This daily program is fun for the whole family. Guided tours of the incredible life under the dock at the Homer Harbor. 1 hour tours leave from the CACS yurt on the Spit at 1pm and 4pm daily, June- August. $5/ participant.

Alaska Coastal Ecology Field Camps

Ecology field camps for college, high school or other organized youth groups can be arranged during the summer. Program length ranges from two to six days with guided activities and lodging at Peterson Bay Field Station combined with guided activities at Wynn Nature Center or Kastisna Bay Lab. More info >>

Service Learning Expeditions

Service Learning Expeditions can be arranged from June - August. Groups learn about natural history and stewardship through service projects. Projects can include trail work, building projects, invasive plant management, facilities beautification, and more. Call 907-235-6667 to arrange.

Retreats

Group retreats can be arranged at the Peterson Bay Field Station. Enjoy a semi-remote, rustic setting to connect your group to the amazing natural surroundings and to each other. Call 907-235-6667 to arrange or sign up for one of our scheuduled retreats for 2012!

New for 2012:  Wilderness Wellness Retreat. Two retreat weekends, June 8 -10 and August 17 - 19.  Join Jean Marcey of Wilderness Wellness as she leads you in a life-changing experience at the Peterson Bay Field Station.  During the retreat, you will have the time, space and coaching to help you clarify and commit to the health promoting and life enhancing behaviors that are important to you.  The experience includes several short workshop-type sessions, guided hikes led by CACS naturalists, delicious healthy meals and snacks and plenty of unstructured time to do what is best for you.  A one-hour follow-up coaching session is available for each guest after the retreat (if desired).  Cost is $500 and includes retreat fee, boat transportation, lodging and food.  Register for the retreat here.

High School Internships

CACS offers a volunteer internship program for high school students who wish to gain more experience working in the fields of environmental education and environmental science. The internship combines working at the Carl Wynn Nature Center and the Homer Spit Yurt assisting with our popular Creature of the Dock Tours. Interns are also trained to be camp counselors for our summer camps for youth ages 9-15. Interns are encouraged to work on a special project of interest during their 6 week internship. Paid internships for students completing junior or senior year of college, or recently graduated. Positions available at Wynn Nature Center and Peterson Bay Field Station. April to May and June-August. Applications due Feb. 1. Check for position openings here.
