Junior Naturalist Summer Camp

July 24th -27th, 2014

Ages 9-12. Four-day camp with two day sessions at the Wynn Nature Center and two overnights at the Peterson Bay Field Station. Explore the diverse habitats and wildlife of the forests and beaches around Kachemak Bay. Parents welcome to attend. Cost: $300 per person.

Marine Mammal Mysteries

August 4th-8th, 2014

Ages 9-15. This NEW camp is for kids who are curious about the ins and outs of animals.  Campers will spend 4 nights and 5 days at the Peterson Bay Field Station learning about marine mammals, being wildlife detectives and articulating (or putting together) a mystery skeleton with 'Mr. Bone, Lee Post! Includes a boat tour on Kachemak Bay to view marine mammals. Cost: $500 per person.

Teen EcoAdventure Camp

        June 12th - 20th, 2014: Dude, what's happening to my world!?

Ages 12-15. This 9 day outdoor adventure and environmental stewardship camp includes 4 overnights at the Peterson Bay Field Station, 2 nights camping near Grewingk Glacier, and 1 night campout at Portage Glacier. Activities include backcountry camping, hiking, kayaking, yurt camping, campfire cooking, oceanography tour of Kachemak Bay, a visit to an Oyster Farm and multi-media exploration. 

We are excited to partner with Homer Wilderness Leaders to provide an exciting, 3-day backpacking and camping adventure at Grewingk Glacier and Rusty's Lagoon.  HoWL lead instructor Ross Beane will join CACS staff for this backcountry portion of the trip.

Cost: $850 per person. Price includes ALL transportation (RT to Peterson Bay, on-board oceanography cruise & RT to Glacier Spit, food and lodging)

Family Camps

June 27-29, 2014

August 8-10, 2014

Fun and adventure for the family.  CACS Family Nature Camps are a great opportunity to get families to be together and get outside in an amazing Kachemak Bay setting.  Activities include: tidepooling, hiking, camfire songs, wildlife watching plus games and hands-on activities for all ages.  Families sleep in yurts.  Costs inlcude boat transportation, meals and program.  Kayaking is available at an additional cost.  For more information please contact us! 

Cost: $450 includes 2 adults & 1 child, $375 includes 1 adult & 1 child (each additional family member is $80). Price includes ALL transportation, meals, lodging and program costs for the entire weekend! Kayaking is optional and an additional $50 per person.

Art & Nature Day Camps - Wynn Nature Center

Explore nature and create with a local artist!

July 8 - 11 (4 days) 10am - 2pm

Ages 5 - 12: This NEW day camp features exploration of the Wynn Nature Center, creation of art inspired by nature and fun filled days of outdoor games, short hikes, and creativity!

Transportation is available for a small fee from the CACS Headquarters Bldg.

Extend your day for only $5 more and join in on one or more of our weekly programs - BioKids or Trackers!

Knee-high Naturalist Program

Ages 2-4. Fridays: 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.  A preschool story hour that includes a story, short hike and craft activity.  June - August. Parents welcome. $2 donation requested (Members free!). Programs begin June 20, 2014 and continue through September.

Bio-kids: Art and Nature

Ages 5-8. Tuesdays: 1-3 p.m.  Weekly series of programs exploring art & nature. Each weekly program includes an art or craft project, and a short hike.  Please dress for the weather! Drop-ins are welcome. $5/class or $4/class for CACS members.  Program begins June 17, 2014 and goes until August 12.

Trackers

Ages 8-11. Wednesdays 1-3pm. Weekly program that explores the exciting world of wildlife (including mammals, birds and forensics!)  Learn the basics of birding and monitoring nesting songbirds, investigate skulls, learn to live trap voles and monitor small mammal movement and more at the Wynn Nature Center.  Get a sneak peak of the secret lives of the birds and animals that live at the Wynn Nature Center.  Drop-ins are welcome.  $5/class, $4/class for CACS members.Program begins June 18, 2014 and goes until August 13.

Creatures of the Dock

All Ages!  1pm and 4pm daily. Perfect for families or people who have a short amount of time but want to see lots of sea creatures!  This daily program is fun for the whole family. Guided tours of the incredible life under the dock at the Homer Harbor. 1 hour tours leave from the CACS yurt on the Spit., June- August. $5/ per person.

Little S.P.I.T.S.

Ages 2-4. Tuesdays 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.  A preschool story hour at the Yurt on the Spit that includes an ocean-related story, short walk to look at cool marine invertebrates and a craft activity.  June - August. Parents welcome. $2 donation requested (Members free!). Programs begin June 18, 2013 and continue through August 27.

S.P.I.T. Kids 

Ages 6-10. Monday - Wednesday - Friday. 10:00am - 1:00pm.  Enjoy a Sneak Peak Into Things as you explore sea creatures under the dock, search for seabirds and marine mammals, taste and learn about beach plants, do ocean crafts and MORE!  $7 per day or 3 days for $18.  Program begins June 17 and goes until August 16.

Alaska Coastal Ecology Field Camps

Ecology field camps for college, high school or other organized youth groups can be arranged during the summer. Program length ranges from two to six days with guided activities and lodging at Peterson Bay Field Station combined with guided activities at Wynn Nature Center or Kastisna Bay Lab. More info >>

Service Learning Expeditions

Service Learning Expeditions can be arranged from June - August. Groups learn about natural history and stewardship through service projects. Projects can include trail work, building projects, invasive plant management, facilities beautification, and more. Call 907-235-6667 to arrange.

High School Internships

CACS offers a volunteer internship program for high school students who wish to gain more experience working in the fields of environmental education and environmental science. The internship combines working at the Carl Wynn Nature Center and the Homer Spit Yurt assisting with our popular Creature of the Dock Tours. Interns are also trained to be camp counselors for our summer camps for youth ages 9-15. Interns are encouraged to work on a special project of interest during their 6 week internship. Environmental Educator and Naturalist Internships

Paid internships for students completing junior or senior year of college, or recently graduated. Positions available at Wynn Nature Center and Peterson Bay Field Station. April to May and June-August. Applications due January 6. Check for position openings here.
